7 Places You Must See in Italy

Wondering what are the top must-see places in Italy? With wine vineyards and quaint seaside villages, these are Italy’s 7 must-visit destinations!

Rome might typically take the spotlight as Italy’s token tourist destination, but to really appreciate this beautiful country you need to step outside the walls of the Eternal City. Venture into the countryside for miles of vineyards and olive orchards, or explore seaside villages with clusters of ancient, colorful homes.

Here are my top must-see places in Italy; try to make it to one or two, or even all five!

VENICE

There’s something extremely romantic and charming about Venice. Imagine strolling down alleyways, eating authentic gelato while window shopping for Italian leather handbags. Whether it’s the Basilica di San Marco located in the heart of the Piazza San Marco, the Rialto Bridge, or the Ponte dei Sospiri, there is so much history to be seen on this magical little island, it can seem very overwhelming.

FLORENCE

As the capital of Tuscany, Florence is one of Italy’s most famed—and most visted—cities. Though it’s easy to see why. With its stunning architecture, unique historical presence, and a food scene that will take your taste buds to new heights, Florence will undoubtedly impress.

Piazzale Michelangelo is arguably the most popular and most beautiful view of Florence.

This is the perfect spot to watch the sunset, drink some wine, and even have a picnic. Do realize there will likely be a crowd; especially in high season. Sunset or sunrise is my favorite time to visit.

NAPLES

Italy intensifies as you plunge deeper. Naples is Italy in the extreme — its best (birthplace of pizza) and its worst (home of the Camorra, Naples’ “family” of organized crime).

The streets of Napoli create a more raw ambiance in comparison to other Italian cities. The smell of fresh pizza and crashing sound of the sea are something my heart longs for still to this day.

Walk aimlessly and you’ll probably actually see enough to give you a good impression of how impressive the architecture and history of Naples is.

COMO

Como and the lake of the same name is considered to be one of the most beautiful areas in Italy and is known for its jaw-dropping mountainous landscapes.

When you have seen all the city has to offer, take to the waters of Lake Como and enjoy a sublime boat ride or visit one of the lakeside towns such as Bellagio, Lierna and Dervio – these towns offer some amazing views across the lake and the chance to relax in a fine restaurant or café.

AMALFI COAST

The Amalfi Coast is a glittering jewel that juts out into the Mediterranean. It’s fabled cliffs, jaw-dropping views and heart-stopping drive are just some of its allures.

Those colourful villages homes, staggered on terraced cliffs, fragrant lemon groves, delicious freshly made Italian food and turquoise waters, pretty much make this a dream spot.

ROME

Rome is one of the most iconic and most traveled cities in Europe, with a long history to match. With a mixture of cultures from around the world, Rome has it all. Wander the cobblestone street with gelato in hand, spend some time people watching from the Spanish Steps and take in all of the stunning architecture the city has to offer. Rome is also a foodie’s heaven, from the world-class cuisine, to casual trattorias, to takeaway pizzas.

SICILY

It’s very easy to fall under Sicily’s spell. With olive strewn landscapes, ancient temples, and timeless cuisines, it’s no wonder that it’s one of the most beautiful spots in the Mediterranean. What better way to see it than to hop on a boat and sail the coast.

I spent a month discovering the beautiful island from Palermo, Cefalu, Agrigento, Messina, Trapani and Catania and it was one of my best experiences. Taking the train along the turquoise water with a glass of vino in hand is one of the ways to embrace the Sicilian charm.
